Enclosure
102
On 17th. July, 1903, the Government accepted the com-
-petitive drawings of Messrs. Denison, Ran and Gibbs.
The foundations were put in by Lam Woo under a special
contract in 1904-1905.
-
In August, 1905, a contract for the Superstructure was
let to Messrs. Sanglee & Co. the contract drawings, specification and quantities were supplied by the Architects in accordance with the conditions of the competition.
The Plan and specification and quantities (dated August, 1905) provided for a roof supported by steel principals (or trusses) upon which are laid wood purlins, and the wood rafters
are attached to the wood purlins.
On 30th. August, 1906, the Architects sent in Plan 43 being a plan of the steel principals of the whole roof, at the same time they sent in Plan 44 giving details of the steel princi- -pals or trusses, and Plan 44-A giving details of rafters.
On 11th. September, 1906, Mr. Gale, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, submitted a report on these Plans 43, 44, and 44-A to the Director of Public Works.
Mr. Gale objected to the pitch of the gable roofs and
to the bearing stresses on the steel trusses.
The pitch was shown in the competition drawings accepted
in July, 1903, and Mr. Gale's objections were subsequently met by
the Architects adopting a special kind of roof tile.
The bearing stresses could not be shown in the com- -petition drawings, being matters of detail - they were first shown in August, 1906, on Plans 44 and 44-A.
On 16th. July, 1908, (nearly two years after Mr. Gale's report) Mr. Chatham asked the Crown Solicitor if he had any right to object to the Architects' plans of the roof. The Crown Solicito advised him on 20th. July, 1908, that His Excellency could call upon the Architects to amend the working drawings to his satis-
-faction.
